What does the Peripheral Nervous System consist of?

The Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) consists of nerves that are located outside of the brain and spinal cord. This system includes all the nerves that branch out from the central nervous system (which consists of the brain and spinal cord) to various parts of the body, facilitating communication between the central nervous system and the limbs, organs, and muscles. The PNS is crucial for sending sensory information to the central nervous system and for transmitting motor commands from the central nervous system to the muscles.

Nerves located within the brain belong to the central nervous system rather than the peripheral nervous system, which is why this choice does not apply. Additionally, the PNS contains both sensory and motor nerves, making it more comprehensive than being limited to only sensory or only motor nerves. This allows for a wide range of functions, from feeling sensations like touch and pain to enabling voluntary movements.
